German libraries start summer reading clubs for children

The Stadtbibliothek Deggendorf opened its 14th summer reading club for students in grades 1‑8, running from July 28 to September 19. Participants can borrow books, audiobooks and comics with a club card, attend three themed meetings – Summer Reading, Play Afternoon and Science Afternoon – and take part in a bingo with challenges. An information session is scheduled for July 24, and registration closes on July 18.

Meanwhile, the Volksbücherei in Fürth launched its SOMMERlesen program from July 16 to September 28 for pupils in grades 5‑10. With the help of MIP Immobilien and NORMA, the library added 150 new titles covering fantasy, crime, humor, comics and romance, each available for a two‑week loan. Small prizes are awarded to participants at the end of the program.
