German Library Initiatives Promote Youth Reading Across Saxony and Schwarzenfeld

The 15th edition of the statewide reading programme “Buchsommer Sachsen” was launched in Radeberg, Saxony, with the participation of the Saxon State Minister for Culture and Tourism, Barbara Klepsch, and library officials. The event, financed with roughly €100,000, involves 90 libraries and 120 branches, reaching up to 10,000 students aged 11‑16. Highlights include a youth‑juried book award and author Liv K. Schlett reading from her nominated novel “Birk.”

In Schwarzenfeld, the local library presented its services and community value to the municipal council, emphasizing its role as a cultural hub and its extensive collection and program offerings for residents. Both initiatives aim to foster reading habits among young people and strengthen library engagement in their regions.
