German literary scene highlights June 2026 events, awards and author survey

A self‑publisher survey released in 2026 examined the concerns of authors in the German book market. In Hamburg, a summer reading programme ran from 29 June to 3 July, offering 34 events for children and youths, including readings, workshops and author meetings. Literary festivals in Switzerland, such as the Solothurner Literaturtage and a Bottmingen festival, were discussed for their contrasting strengths and weaknesses.

The Swedish Berman Literature Prize was awarded to French writer Hélène Cixous, with the prize money raised to 1 million Swedish crowns (about €92,000). Barbara Roth celebrated the 30th anniversary of her Offenburg bookstore with a festival. Jona Jeska took over the press department at the publishing house Voland & Quist on 1 April, while Ines Zimzinski wrote about the challenges of converting books into audiobooks. Translator Stefan Weidner received the Sheikh Zayed Book Award translation prize, marking the UAE’s 20th edition of the award.
