German Tourist Dies After Falling into the Rhine near Marckolsheim

A 71‑year‑old German man was found dead in the Rhine River near the French town of Marckolsheim on 4 June. Surveillance footage showed the man, a passenger on a cruise boat, exiting the vessel and entering the water at around 20:15. He was located by aerial rescue units and pulled from the river by firefighters from Marckolsheim after spending roughly an hour in the water. Despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the local river gendarmerie consider the incident may have been a deliberate act, suggesting possible suicide. The death follows a recent drowning in the Bas‑Rhin department, marking the second such fatality in a short period.

The victim was a German national, and the incident occurred within French jurisdiction.
