Germany's metal and electrical industry begins wage negotiations

Regional wage negotiations for Germany's metal and electrical industries have commenced in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. The union IG Metall is demanding a 5 percent wage increase over a 12-month period, aiming to offset recent high inflation. These negotiations impact approximately 3.7 million employees across sectors including automotive, mechanical engineering, and defense.

Employers, represented by Gesamtmetall, have expressed significant concern regarding the economic climate. They argue there is no room for substantial wage increases due to ongoing deindustrialization and the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs. Employers noted that high labor costs are a contributing factor to the current industrial crisis. In Baden-Württemberg, some companies have also raised discussions regarding working hours.

In addition to wage increases, IG Metall is seeking to secure jobs and industrial locations amidst threats of plant closures. The union also intends to advocate for profit-sharing in high-growth companies. The negotiations take place against a backdrop of economic pressure, with some industry sectors reporting financial losses and job reductions.
