German motorways A4, A2 and A40 face extensive closures this summer

The Autobahn GmbH Rheinland will fully close the A4 between the Köln‑West interchange and the Köln‑Eifeltor junction from 22:00 on 10 July until 16 July. A barrier system will be installed to enforce weight limits: the two left lanes will remain limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, while the right lane will continue to permit trucks up to 44 tonnes. All traffic is redirected via a large‑scale detour starting at Köln‑West.

In September, the A2 at Oberhausen‑Königshardt will be closed to all traffic from 11 to 14 September, halting movement toward Dortmund. Simultaneously, the A40 around the Bochum centre will be closed from 11 to 25 September, also stopping traffic toward Dortmund. Drivers of cars are advised to use the A42 as an alternate route, though a weight restriction (3.5 tonnes) applies because of bridge issues near Bottrop. Heavy‑truck traffic is directed to the A448 for a broader detour.

Both closures are intended to accommodate extensive construction work and improve safety, with authorities urging commuters to plan for longer travel times and consider rescheduling appointments where possible.
