German municipal libraries roll out new children's programmes and services
The city library in Rinteln is offering vouchers that allow children starting school to obtain a free library card and access more than 7,000 children’s media, including books, games and digital resources. The vouchers can be exchanged between 15 – 29 August, and each child who redeems a voucher receives a complimentary book.
In Bernau, the municipal library has introduced several initiatives aimed at young readers, such as a monthly open reading session for families, the “Blue‑Bots” mini‑robots that teach basic programming, and plans for a “library of things” where tools and household devices can be borrowed. A summer festival on 13 August 2026 will showcase the new lending items.
Both libraries stress the goal of fostering early enjoyment of reading while incorporating modern technology and broader community resources.
