German municipalities clamp down on underage and night alcohol sales

In Hückeswagen, the city’s Ordnance Office conducted test purchases with 15‑ to 17‑year‑old youths to check compliance with the German Youth Protection Act. Ten retailers were visited; six sold alcohol to minors and one sold prohibited vodka. The city initiated administrative violations against the sellers and warned the management of the involved shops. Mayor Mario Moritz said the checks aim to curb underage drinking and stress the need for proper ID checks.

Meanwhile, Munich’s city council is pursuing stricter controls on late‑night alcohol sales in the Univiertel district after complaints about noise and disorder. The administrative court affirmed the city’s authority to ban take‑away alcohol sales between 22:00 and 05:00, though it reduced an imposed €5,000 fine. The city plans to enforce the restriction soon, pending further hearings, as part of broader efforts that already include a city‑wide alcohol ban at the main train station.
