German municipalities honor local volunteer engagement
Municipalities in Germany are holding events to recognize the contributions of local volunteers. In Weiterstadt, the city hosted a volunteer appreciation day at Schlosspark Braunshardt to honor individuals involved in sports clubs, fire departments, aid organizations, culture, and environmental protection.
Mayor Niklas Gehnich noted that many volunteer leadership roles now require significant time commitments, often comparable to a second job, involving complex tasks such as organizing events and managing finances. The event focused on providing a space for dialogue between volunteers, administration, and political representatives.
In Amberg, the city is observing the 22nd Week of Civic Engagement from September 11 to 20, 2026. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the local volunteer agency, ‘Engagiert in Amberg’. Since its founding in 2011, the agency has connected approximately 1,500 citizens to various service opportunities, with current operations involving 160 volunteers across 16 projects.
