German Museums Mark Major Anniversaries in 2026
The Alte Pinakothek in Munich commemorated the 200th anniversary of its foundation stone laid on 12 June 1823. The museum highlighted its 500‑year‑old Wittelsbach collection, early architectural plans by Johann Christoph von Mannlich, and the final building designed by Leo von Klenze that opened under King Ludwig I.
In Bayreuth, the Historisches Museum celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special exhibition in the Alte Lateinschule. The opening ceremony on 7 June was led by Mayor Dr. Andreas Zippel, and the exhibition ran until 26 July, showcasing the museum’s history and its role in the city’s heritage.
Both events featured public programmes aimed at highlighting the institutions’ historical significance and future relevance within Germany’s cultural landscape.
