German exhibition season 2026‑27

Entities: Ferdane Satir · Ruhr region · Mona Hatoum · Saint‑Boniface Church (Gelsenkirchen) · Manifesta 16

Overview

Late May 2026 saw the Alte Pinakothek’s 200th and Bayreuth Historisches Museum’s 30th anniversaries launch a dense summer programme. In June, exhibitions opened across Upper Swabia, Brandenburg, Hanover and Göttingen – watercolours by Rupprecht Matthies at Kunstverein Jesteburg, Beate Ruberg’s mixed media at Werkstattgalerie Der Bogen, Albrecht Dürer works for the Albertina’s 250‑year celebration, and a free‑entry Berlin weekend spanning medical artefacts to contemporary installations. From 21 June the 16th Manifesta biennial transformed twelve former Ruhr churches in Duisburg, Essen, Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, highlighting migrant artists and post‑industrial themes. The biennale runs through 4 October 2026, featuring more than 100 contemporary artists and collectives—including Mona Hatoum, Luc Tuymans, Alicja Kwade, Katharina Fritsch, Mirosław Bałka, Małgorzata Mirga‑Tas and Olaf Metzel. Installations address immigration and the future of secularised church buildings; one venue is renamed the “Tea Garden of Ferdane Satir” in memory of the Turkish mother killed in a xenophobic fire in 1984. Organisers also use the project to spotlight the broader question of repurposing Germany’s roughly 40 000 churches, many of which may become libraries, co‑working spaces, housing or commercial venues. A community project launched on 27 June in Dortmund’s St Martin Church, “Nebenan – Quartiersgeschichten – auf dem Weg zur Ehrenamtskirche”, offered lectures and the exhibition “Ein Nachkriegsquartier und seine Kirche”, running to 4 October. Parallel festivals included Heidelberg Kunstsonntag, the reopened Armeemuseum Kavaliers wing in Ingolstadt, and Berlin’s Neukölln Arcaden 48‑hour art preview. Regional venues kept momentum: Galerie Altes Rathaus Musberg presented “Im Fluss sein” (20 June–26 July) on Danube underground waterways, and Neunkirchen’s Städtische Galerie hosted the free‑entry “Stadt Land Fluss” Kunstschau (21 June–26 July, finissage 2 August).
