German orchard associations promote traditional fruit varieties

Various regional fruit and orchard associations in Germany are hosting events to promote the preservation of traditional orchards and old fruit varieties.

In Heideck, the Obst- und Gartenbauverein Eysölden organized an action day titled ‘From the Tree to the Glass.’ The event included apple pressing demonstrations, tree pruning workshops, and educational activities for youth. The association is currently seeking surplus apples and pears to produce regional juice, offering compensation for fruit delivered to collection points.

In Lüneburg, the Lüneburger Streuobstwiesenverein has announced an apple festival scheduled for October 4, 2026, at the Hof an den Teichen. The festival will feature traditional apple juice pressing, an exhibition of over 50 apple varieties, and pomological consultations to help visitors identify specific fruit types. The association focuses on the long-term preservation of heritage fruit species.
