German fruit biodiversity and orchard preservation efforts

Overview

Various regional fruit and orchard associations in Germany are organizing events to promote the preservation of traditional fruit varieties and orchard ecosystems.

In late September 2026, the Loki-Schmidt-Garten in Hamburg scheduled the North German Apple Days to showcase fruit biodiversity, featuring approximately 250 old apple varieties and 75 pear varieties. The event, held in collaboration with BUND Hamburg, focuses on the importance of orchard meadows as vital habitats.

In Heideck, the Obst- und Gartenbauverein Eysölden held an action day titled ‘From the Tree to the Glass,’ which included workshops and juice pressing. The association is currently seeking surplus fruit to produce regional juice, offering compensation for deliveries.

In Lüneburg, the Lüneburger Streuobstwiesenverein announced an apple festival for October 4, 2026, at the Hof an den Teichen, featuring exhibitions of over 50 varieties and pomological consultations.

Other regional initiatives include the second Schwälmer Apfeltag in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain on October 3, where pomologist Lissy Mihaly will identify unknown varieties, a process being documented through student illustrations. In Bayreuth, the Streuobstallianz Bayreuth is organizing an apple festival for October 11, 2026, at the Lindenhof environmental information center, featuring orchard tours and juice pressing.

Additionally, the Biologische Station is making old fruit varieties, such as ‘Prinz Albrecht von Preußen’ and ‘Goldparmäne,’ available for order. These varieties are noted for higher polyphenol content, which may benefit some allergy sufferers.
