German Parliament Rejects Missile Aid to Ukraine
The German Bundestag voted on 9 July 2026 to reject a motion that would have supplied Taurus cruise missiles and additional Patriot air‑defence missiles to Ukraine. The vote tally was 79 in favour, 510 against and one abstention. The coalition government, led by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, argued that the federal government alone should set military strategy and that Ukraine’s immediate priorities are financial support and strengthening its air‑defence network, not long‑range weapons.
The proposal, backed by the Greens, also called for increased production of Patriot systems. Opposition came not only from opposition parties but also from within the governing coalition, while the AfD called for an end to all German aid to Kyiv. Russia warned that any weapons transfers to Ukraine would make NATO members legitimate targets.
