German parties move to combat right-wing extremism
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the SPD, Die Linke, and the Greens are planning to establish a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate right-wing extremist networks and their connections to parliament. The proposal was included in a resolution regarding coalition negotiations for the potential next state government. The parties identified right-wing extremism as the greatest threat to democracy in the state and explicitly stated there would be no cooperation with the AfD.
Separately, the FDP district association in Lübeck has called for a partial ban on specific state branches of the AfD. The FDP Lübeck is specifically targeting branches that have already been classified as proven right-wing extremists by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, such as those in Thuringia and Saxony. The group argues that a partial ban is a measured constitutional tool to protect a defensive democracy where evidence of extremism is clearest.
