German police intensify crackdown on violent incidents at train stations

Police forces in Lower Saxony have stepped up security at several designated "dangerous places" in the Göttingen region, including the Hameln station forecourt, Hildesheim main station and cemetery, and the Waageplatz area in Göttingen. Over the reporting period, officers conducted 771 identity checks, 898 searches and seized 75 knives, an axe, a baseball bat, an iron rod and other weapons, alongside drug caches. The measures also introduced video surveillance at the Hameln station and a weapons‑prohibited zone around the Waageplatz, aiming to curb youth‑driven assaults and drug‑related crime.

In Dortmund, the federal police responded to two separate violent episodes at the Hauptbahnhof and an S‑Bahn station. One attacker, a 32‑year‑old, resisted arrest, was found with a concealed knife and faced charges for resisting law‑enforcement and weapons violations. A second, 44‑year‑old, threw a glass bottle and stones at train staff, injuring a conductor's forearm before being detained. Both incidents underscore a broader push by German authorities to strengthen safety at railway hubs.
