Germany intensifies fight against telephone fraud targeting seniors

Authorities and consumer protection agencies in Germany are intensifying efforts to combat telephone fraud targeting senior citizens. The police in the Oberpfalz region are distributing prevention flyers, styled as medical prescriptions, to dental practices and nursing services to alert patients to scams such as the ‘grandchild trick’, fake police officers, and fraudulent calls from international call centers.

In a notable case reported by the Consumer Advice Center in Plauen, an 82-year-old woman was pressured into purchasing excessive amounts of toilet paper and kitchen rolls by a company named Kaniss. The salesperson reportedly used emotional manipulation, including pleading and crying, to secure a deal totaling over 1,000 euros for goods priced significantly above market rates. The victim eventually revoked the contract after receiving the first shipment.

Community-based prevention is also being implemented through local events. In Hachenburg, the Cinexx cinema is hosting an information afternoon for seniors, featuring lectures from criminal investigators and films designed to educate the public on recognizing and responding to social engineering tactics.
