German police seek new leads in 1988 disappearance of Dagmar Knops

Investigators in Germany are revisiting the 1988 disappearance of Dagmar Knops, a 22-year-old student from Cologne. Knops vanished in Kempen during a visit to her hometown on the night of March 28, 1988, after leaving the Lichtblick restaurant alone.

During a recent broadcast of the television program “Aktenzeichen XY … ungelöst”, a witness came forward with information regarding another violent crime against a woman that occurred around the same time. Fabian Puchet of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office noted that this could suggest the perpetrator committed previous offenses against women.

The Mönchengladbach police are currently investigating two primary scenarios: that Knops was attacked by unknown individuals on her walk home, or that an encounter with someone she knew escalated into a crime. Authorities are specifically looking for witnesses who may have been sitting on a park bench near the restaurant that night, as well as information regarding two anonymous letters sent in 2005 and 2008.

Missing items include a copper bracelet, a silver chain, and a wallet. Police believe the disappearance was a homicide, though her body has never been found.
