German cold case investigations

Overview

German authorities are revisiting long-term missing persons cases through renewed investigations and media appeals.

In Kempen, police are seeking leads regarding the 1988 disappearance of 22-year-old student Dagmar Knops. Knops was last seen leaving the Lichtblick restaurant alone on March 28, 1988, and never arrived at her nearby home. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide. Following a broadcast of the television program ‘Aktenzeichen XY... Ungelöst’ on November 4, 2026, a witness came forward with information regarding another violent crime against a woman that occurred around the same time. Fabian Puchet of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office noted that this could suggest the perpetrator committed previous offenses against women.

Mönchengladbach police are currently investigating two primary scenarios: that Knops was attacked by unknown individuals on her walk home, or that an encounter with someone she knew escalated into a crime. Authorities are specifically looking for witnesses who may have been sitting on a park bench near the restaurant that night, as well as information regarding two anonymous letters sent in 2005 and 2008. Missing items include a copper bracelet, a silver chain, and a wallet.

In Ludwigshafen, authorities are also seeking information concerning the 1985 disappearance of six-year-old Sven Hollstein. Hollstein vanished from his apartment building in the Pfingstweide district. While a previous legal proceeding involving a suspect ended in an acquittal, the case remains unsolved. It is currently unclear if the child was a victim of a crime or an accident.
