Germany police warn of rising fraud via impersonation

German authorities are issuing widespread warnings following a surge in sophisticated fraud schemes targeting vulnerable individuals. In Munich, a man is facing trial for allegedly defrauding seniors of approximately 107,000 euros by impersonating police officers. Separate incidents in the Munich area involved criminals using psychological pressure to convince elderly residents to hand over gold and savings under the guise of protecting them from crime.

In Ansbach, scammers utilized “shock calls,” with one perpetrator posing as a police officer claiming a relative was involved in a fatal accident, while another posed as a doctor requesting large sums for urgent cancer medication. Similar impersonation tactics were reported in Hamburg, where criminals posing as police officers stole jewelry from a senior citizen.

Other deceptive methods include service-based scams. In Schwerin and Ludwigslust-Parchim, individuals posing as window cleaners used mobile card readers to charge victims significantly higher amounts than agreed upon. In Krefeld, scammers gained entry to a home by impersonating water utility workers, resulting in the theft of jewelry worth five figures. Police emphasize that official institutions will never demand large sums of money or valuables over the phone.
