German police warn of fraudulent pest control scams

Police in Germany are warning the public about fraudulent pest control services targeting homeowners during the wasp and hornet season. Scammers often use deceptive internet advertisements, promising 24-hour emergency services and free travel to lure victims.

In Aachen, a senior citizen reportedly paid 1,400 euros for the removal of a hornet nest to a provider whose listed business address in Munich did not exist. The Aachen police confirmed that eight cases of suspected usury have been reported in their jurisdiction since the beginning of the year.

Authorities in Karlsruhe have also issued warnings, noting that scammers frequently use fear tactics by falsely claiming that protected species, such as the European hornet, are the invasive Asian hornet to justify high fees and urgent action. In one reported instance, a company illegally destroyed a protected nest and issued a four-digit invoice.
