Pest control fraud in Karlsruhe and Germany

Overview

Authorities in Karlsruhe and police across Germany are warning residents about fraudulent pest control services targeting homeowners during the wasp and hornet season. Scammers utilize deceptive websites to advertise 24-hour emergency assistance and free travel to lure victims.

These operators frequently employ high-pressure fear tactics, often misidentifying protected species as invasive Asian hornets to justify immediate, expensive interventions. In one documented case, a worker misidentified protected European hornets as invasive Asian hornets, illegally destroyed the nest, and issued a four-digit invoice demanding immediate payment.

Reports of these scams have extended beyond Karlsruhe. In Aachen, police confirmed eight cases of suspected usury have been reported since the beginning of the year. In one instance, a senior citizen reportedly paid 1,400 euros for nest removal to a provider whose listed Munich business address did not exist.

Officials remind citizens that different species carry different legal protections. While Asian hornets may be removed by professionals, wasps are under general species protection, and European hornets are strictly protected, meaning disturbing their nests without written permission is illegal.
