German politicians demand security checks for research institutions
German politicians from the SPD, CDU, and Greens are calling for nationwide security audits of research institutions following the discovery of security flaws at the Helmholtz Centre for Information Security (Cispa). The concerns arose from Cispa's collaborations with Chinese university scientists linked to military environments.
Representatives, including Johannes Schätzl (SPD) and Marc Henrichmann (CDU), emphasized the need for higher risk awareness to prevent scientific espionage. They warned that failing to identify connections between research partners and foreign military or intelligence services could damage Germany's economic and research standing.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has also issued warnings regarding the potential outflow of critical technology through academic cooperation with China. The agency noted that China utilizes such transfers to bolster its political, economic, and military dominance. Key sensitive sectors identified include quantum technology, artificial intelligence, hypersonic technology, biotechnology, and surveillance tech.
