Germany's Public Debt Reaches Record 2.66 trillion Euros in 2025

Germany’s total public debt rose to a record 2.662 trillion euros at the end of 2025, pushing per‑capita indebtedness to €31,887 – an increase of €1,821 (6.1 %). The overall debt grew by €151.4 billion, a 6 % rise year‑on‑year. Federal (Bund) debt reached €1.8404 trillion, up 6.2 % (€107.7 billion) from 2024. State (Länder) debt amounted to €624.9 billion, a 2.9 % increase (€17.5 billion). Municipal and communal debt climbed for the sixth consecutive year to €197.0 billion, up 15.4 %. Per‑capita debt fell only in three regions – Rhineland‑Palatinate, North Rhine‑Westphalia and Berlin – while Saxony registered the strongest per‑capita rise, 17.1 % to €1,736. Baden‑Württemberg and Bremen also saw notable per‑capita increases.

The figures were released by the Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) and confirm that Germany’s debt load continues to expand across all levels of government, despite modest regional declines.
