Germany rail construction causes regional service disruptions

Extensive railway construction projects across several German regions are causing significant disruptions to rail services and commuters.

In the Rhine-Ruhr area, the RE 19 line between Bocholt and the Ruhr region faces restrictions until October 30 due to modernization work at the Duisburg rail hub. This includes diversions between Duisburg Central Station and Oberhausen-Sterkrade, the cancellation of stops at Oberhausen Central Station, and the implementation of replacement bus services.

Simultaneously, a large-scale construction phase affecting the Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen, and Essen areas is underway. This project, which includes bridge renewals and track modernization, is expected to increase travel times and transfers for passengers, particularly those traveling to Düsseldorf Airport during the autumn holidays.

In the Mainz region, modernization of the Mainz rail hub remains on schedule. While major long-term closures are not expected for the remainder of the year, Deutsche Bahn has announced several nighttime disruptions. These include nighttime diversions and partial cancellations on the S8 and S9 lines between October and November, necessitating replacement bus services between various stations including Frankfurt Airport, Mainz, and Wiesbaden.
