German regions implement new primary school and health-related education policies

New educational regulations are being implemented in different German regions. In the Kassel district, a nationwide legal entitlement to all-day care for primary school students has commenced. Students in the first grade and progressively through the fourth grade are entitled to at least eight hours of daily care, which includes a warm lunch and extracurricular activities.

However, the rollout faces challenges in the Kassel district, specifically regarding a shortage of personnel and physical space for afternoon activities and lunch services. While some schools, such as the Niederkaufungen primary school, report a smooth start focused on teacher networking, others struggle with resource availability.

In Saarland, authorities are planning a new regulation for 'part-time schooling' to support students with physical or mental illnesses. This measure aims to provide a legal framework for students who cannot manage a full school day due to conditions such as chronic illness, depression, or Long Covid. The goal is to offer an alternative to choosing between a full schedule or complete sick leave, ensuring that illness does not become a barrier to education.
