German renewable energy sector faces crisis amid insolvencies

The German renewable energy sector is facing a significant crisis, characterized by increasing insolvencies and financial instability among key players. Despite substantial government subsidies, companies driving the energy transition are struggling to survive.

Major industry developments include the insolvency filing of Enerparc, a prominent European solar park developer, which puts approximately 380 jobs at risk. Other companies, such as wind power project developer Sowitec, have already faced insolvency, while wind park developer PNE is reportedly up for sale without finding a buyer. Additionally, firms like BayWa r.e. and Abo Energy are facing severe financial difficulties.

The crisis is attributed to several factors, including competition from lower-priced Chinese manufacturers and concerns over the long-term viability of current subsidy models. Proposed revisions to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) aim to phase out feed-in tariffs and implement power limits to manage grid congestion, moves that have triggered panic within the industry.
