German renewable energy sector economic crisis
Overview
Germany’s renewable energy sector is experiencing significant economic instability. Initially, the industry faced challenges as wind and solar projects were abandoned or halted due to deteriorating economic conditions. In the wind sector, average award values dropped from 6.83 cents per kilowatt-hour in May 2025 to 5.06 cents in May 2026, driven by high competition. These lower revenues, alongside high lease, financing, and development costs, rendered projects unviable for companies such as ABO Energy, Statkraft, and RheinEnergie.
The situation has escalated into a broader crisis characterized by increasing insolvencies among key industry players. Major developments include the insolvency filing of solar developer Enerparc, which threatened approximately 380 jobs, and the insolvency of wind developer Sowitec. Other firms, including PNE, BayWa r.e., and Abo Energy, have faced severe financial difficulties or potential sales.
This instability is attributed to competition from lower-priced Chinese manufacturers and uncertainty regarding subsidy models. Proposed revisions to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), which include phasing out feed-in tariffs and implementing power limits to manage grid congestion, have reportedly triggered panic within the industry.
