German reports highlight rising mental health issues and leadership health gaps

Recent reports in Germany indicate a significant rise in mental health-related workplace absences and a disconnect regarding the health of leadership figures.

A report from the AOK Scientific Institute (WIdO) shows that mental health-related sick days among AOK-insured employees have increased by nearly 42 percent over the last decade. In 2016, there were 284 days of incapacity per 100 members, rising to 403 days in 2025.

Simultaneously, the HanseMerkur Longevity Leadership Report, conducted by Ipsos, reveals that while German executives prioritize the health of their employees, they often neglect their own. This trend impacts long-term resilience and professional outlooks, with younger leaders being notably less likely to envision working into old age.

Experts suggest that companies often mistake exhaustion for a lack of motivation. Motivation expert Norman Gräter notes that instead of pushing for higher performance, leaders should assess whether employees have already reached their capacity limits.
