German researchers and analysts advance hydrogen storage and policy insights
Researchers at RWTH Aachen and the Helmholtz Institute in Erlangen‑Nürnberg have published a review on bio‑inspired liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). The work examines how enzymes and microbial redox systems could enable hydrogen storage and release under milder conditions, potentially reducing the temperature and catalyst requirements of current LOHC technologies.
Separately, the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research compiled a meta‑fact‑check of more than 100 hydrogen studies. The analysis confirms hydrogen’s strategic role where direct electrification is limited—particularly in steel, chemicals, aviation and shipping. It also highlights persistent challenges: high green‑hydrogen production costs, the need for extensive pipeline networks, and the limited economic case for household‑scale distribution. The report notes that scaling and technological progress may lower costs, but deployment will remain application‑specific.
