German hydrogen research, technology, and industrial scaling

Overview

In late July 2026, German research institutes released two complementary updates on the country’s hydrogen agenda. A review from RWTH Aachen and the Helmholtz Institute highlighted bio-inspired liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), showing how enzymes and microbial redox systems could lower the temperature and catalyst demands of hydrogen storage and release. In parallel, Fraunhofer’s meta-analysis of more than 100 studies reinforced hydrogen’s strategic value for hard-to-electrify sectors such as steel, chemicals, aviation and shipping, while flagging high production costs, infrastructure gaps and limited economics for household distribution.

A few days later, the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter showcased practical advances. Fraunhofer IPA presented the IREKA project’s progress in cutting iridium usage in PEM electrolyzer anodes without sacrificing performance, addressing the cost barrier highlighted earlier. The campus, supported by Fraunhofer IST, discussed how renewable energy and climate-neutral industry can be integrated regionally.

By mid-August 2026, the focus shifted toward industrial implementation and infrastructure financing. Lanxess successfully transitioned a large-scale industrial plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen to hydrogen, utilizing a byproduct from a neighboring Covestro chlorine electrolysis plant to power a spray dryer for iron oxide pigments. This transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes annually. Simultaneously, KfW IPEX-Bank provided Thyssengas with a 130 million EUR revolving credit facility to support the transformation of its long-distance gas network, preparing the 4,400-kilometer infrastructure to facilitate future hydrogen transport alongside natural gas and biogas.
