Europe faces severe water restrictions amid intense heat and drought

Severe drought and high temperatures across Germany and France have triggered widespread water restrictions and conservation appeals. In Germany, numerous municipalities have banned filling pools, watering lawns, and washing cars to protect dwindling supplies. Hessenwasser has urged citizens to use drinking water responsibly to prevent infrastructure strain, noting that consumption has reached record levels. The Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) has also called for urban cooling measures, such as more greenery and public water fountains, to mitigate the economic impact of heat on retail centers.

In France, the situation is equally critical. In the Alpes-Maritimes department, water restrictions have expanded to 100 communes due to record-breaking July temperatures and high tourist demand. In Calvados, the western half of the department has been placed in a state of drought crisis, necessitating strict limitations on non-essential water use. Meanwhile, in the Alsace region, farmers continue to irrigate crops despite growing public concern over potential waste during the dry spell.

Additionally, an ÖKO-TEST of German mineral waters revealed that while many brands meet high standards, some products contain traces of contaminants such as PFAS and pesticide degradation products.
