German Retail Association warns of Chinese shops posing as local retailers

The German Retail Association (HDE) is warning consumers about online shops that appear to be German-based but are actually operated by entities in China. Unlike traditional fake shops that never deliver goods, these providers often fulfill orders, but the products frequently fail to match the descriptions provided on the websites.

These shops often use German names, .de domains, German-language text, and sometimes even list European addresses to appear local. A primary issue identified by the HDE is the difficulty and expense of returns. Many of these business models rely on high return shipping costs to China, which can equal or exceed the value of the item itself, effectively discouraging consumers from exercising their right to cancel or claim warranties.

This model often functions similarly to dropshipping, where the shop handles billing while the manufacturer ships directly from China. The HDE notes that while dropshipping is legal, these specific providers are problematic because they obscure actual delivery terms and return conditions, misleading consumers about their contractual partners.
