German schools promote cycling through new local initiatives

Schools in Germany are implementing various cycling initiatives to promote fitness, coordination, and environmental awareness.

In Weiterstadt, the Hessenwaldschule has officially become a ‘Bikeschool’ through a partnership with the non-profit organization Bikepool Hessen. The school received 14 new bicycles intended for training purposes, such as riding on pump trails, to encourage physical activity and environmental consciousness. The program is integrated into the curriculum as an elective in the area of ‘aesthetic education.’

Meanwhile, Gymnasium Sottrum participated in the ‘Stadtradeln’ (City Cycling) campaign for the first time. A total of 83 students completed nearly 1,600 trips, covering 17,199 kilometers. This effort resulted in an estimated CO2 saving of 2,820.6 kilograms. To reward the students' engagement in this climate-friendly initiative, the district provided ice cream for the participating classes.
