German SHK Trade Association Confirms Eligibility to Install Solar Systems

The Higher Regional Court of Koblenz (OLG Koblenz) ruled on 2 June 2026 that firms not listed in the German craft register may not advertise planning, installation or maintenance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The Zentralverband Sanitär‑Heizung‑Klimatechnik (ZVSHK) welcomed the decision, emphasizing that the SHK trade – encompassing sanitarians, heating engineers, plumbers and installers – is fully qualified to carry out PV, solar‑thermal and heat‑pump installations. Michael Kober, technical referent of ZVSHK, noted that the ruling should not suggest only two trades are responsible for solar work and highlighted the legal basis for plumbing and heating crafts in roof‑ and façade metal work.

ZVSHK also pointed to ongoing updates of a sector‑wide agreement on safe PV installation, which the association joined in 2024 and is being expanded to include additional trades and professional bodies. The clarification aims to support cross‑trade cooperation and ensure legally compliant, high‑quality solar installations in German buildings.
