German SMEs face rising administrative burdens and digitalization needs

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany, particularly in regions like Bavaria, face increasing administrative burdens as they grow. While entrepreneurs often start by managing all daily operations and administration themselves, increasing workloads eventually necessitate a shift toward delegating routine tasks to focus on core business activities and customer relationships.

According to a KfW Mittelstand Panel evaluation from April 2025, SMEs spend an average of 7 percent of their working time on legal and regulatory requirements, while solo self-employed individuals spend 8.7 percent. This equates to approximately 32 hours per month per company.

To mitigate these time losses, digital solutions are becoming essential. Digitalizing insurance management, for instance, allows business owners to centralize policies, update data without manual forms, and separate business from private expenses more efficiently. Utilizing direct digital models can also reduce costs by eliminating intermediary fees.
