DAK survey reveals rising sleep disorders among German students
A large-scale survey commissioned by the health insurance company DAK reveals a significant rise in sleep disorders and exhaustion among German students in grades five to ten. According to the DAK Prevention Radar, nearly half of the surveyed students report sleep disturbances, while 69 percent feel exhausted at least once a week.
The study, which involved approximately 30,000 children and adolescents across 15 German federal states, also noted a decline in general well-being and future outlook. DAK Chief Andreas Storm linked these findings to poor performance in international education assessments like PISA, noting that exhaustion creates poor conditions for successful learning.
Medical experts, including Michael Hubmann of the Association of Pediatricians and Adolescent Physicians, suggested that excessive media use and algorithmically driven social media consumption late at night may be contributing factors to these rising sleep issues.
