Sleep deprivation and exhaustion trends in Germany
Overview
Recent health studies in Germany indicate widespread issues with sleep and exhaustion across different age groups.
A study by the Robert Koch-Institut found that nearly 40 percent of German adults sleep less than the recommended seven hours per night during the week. The research noted demographic disparities, with men being more frequently affected than women, particularly those aged 45 to 64. Experts linked chronic sleep deprivation to various medical conditions and potential reductions in professional longevity.
New data from the DAK Prevention Radar, involving approximately 30,000 children and adolescents across 15 federal states, confirms a significant rise in sleep disorders among students in grades five through ten. Nearly half of these students report sleep disturbances, and 69 percent report feeling exhausted at least once a week. This trend coincides with a reported decline in general well-being and future outlook among youth.
DAK Chief Andreas Storm linked these findings to poor performance in international education assessments like PISA, stating that exhaustion creates “poor conditions for successful learning.” Medical experts, including Michael Hubmann of the Association of Pediatricians and Adolescent Physicians, suggested that excessive media use and “algorithmically driven social media consumption late at night” may be contributing factors to these rising issues.
