German town libraries start summer reading clubs for children and youths

The public library in Sundern, North Rhine‑Westphalia, opened its Summer Reading Club on 20 July 2026. The programme invites children, teenagers and adults to read, listen to audio books and take part in creative workshops. Participants collect stamps for each completed book or activity and can earn a prize after gathering three stamps. A series of events – including a stop‑motion workshop, manga drawing session, gaming evenings on a PlayStation 5 and a children’s cinema – run through the holidays, culminating in a closing ceremony on 11 September.

In the town of Burg, the municipal library "Brigitte Reimann" launched its Lesesommer 2026 on 6 July, running until 14 August. The free reading campaign targets school‑aged children (6‑16) who must read and review at least two books during the vacation period. Completed participants receive a certificate for school recognition. The library provides a dedicated book pool, evaluation sheets and information on the final award ceremony.

Both initiatives aim to boost reading competence and enjoyment among young people during the summer break.
