German Transport Minister Calls for Rail Punctuality Reforms as Austria Advances Electrification

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder said that improving train punctuality in Germany requires better operational procedures by the railway company, not just additional infrastructure investment. He warned that staff levels must be increased for tasks such as cleaning trains arriving late at depots and that realistic punctuality targets have been set after years of under‑investment.

In Austria, the regional Mattersburg line is being modernised with a €143 million programme that will fully electrify the route by the end of 2027. The works include barrier‑free stations, underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists, new park‑&‑ride facilities, and the removal or grade‑separation of level crossings. Once completed, the line will allow direct train services to Vienna using 100 percent green electricity, improving speed, comfort and safety for commuters in Burgenland.
