German transport projects face mounting cost overruns and delays

The Stuttgart 21 rail hub, originally slated for an earlier opening, now faces a cost increase of up to €3 billion and its inauguration is pushed back to 2031. The financing strain reflects broader challenges in large‑scale German infrastructure.

In Frankfurt, the planned U‑5 subway extension into the Europaviertel has seen its budget climb sharply. Initial estimates of €515 million have been supplemented by an additional €72 million in higher‑than‑expected tender prices, and the line’s completion is not expected before 2029. Construction of the above‑ground section along Europa‑Allee began this spring, while tunnelling continues for the 1.2‑km underground segment.

Both projects illustrate persistent funding gaps and schedule slippages in Germany’s major transportation initiatives.
