German universities prepare for winter semester start

winter semester higher education university enrollment student popularity German universities

The winter semester is commencing at various German universities, with notable trends appearing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Bavaria.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the University of Rostock reports high demand for restricted admission programs such as communication and media sciences, biosciences, and medicine. At the University of Greifswald, popular subjects include medicine, law, psychology, and pharmacy, with new teaching degrees seeing a surge of over 50 percent compared to the previous year.

In Bavaria, the winter semester begins on October 1. Science Minister Markus Blume noted the diverse age range of students, including those under 18 and over 75. Data from the 2025/26 winter semester showed 401,154 students enrolled in Bavarian higher education institutions, marking a 2.1 percent decrease—the first decline in a decade—attributed to changes in the gymnasium school system.
