German university semester commencement and student costs

Overview

The commencement of the winter semester at German universities has highlighted both academic trends and economic pressures. In regions such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, universities like Rostock and Greifswald have seen high demand for specific programs, including medicine, law, and a surge in new teaching degrees. In Bavaria, enrollment data for the 2025/26 semester showed 401,154 students, representing a 2.1 percent decrease—the first decline in ten years.

As the semester progresses, students are facing significant financial strain due to rising housing costs. The MLP Student Housing Report 2026 indicates that the average warm rent for a small student apartment is approximately 567 euros, which exceeds the current BAföG housing allowance of 380 euros. Rents for small apartments rose by an average of 3.5 percent in the first half of 2026. Overall, approximately 2.9 million people are enrolled in German higher education for the 2025/2026 winter semester.
