German youth wings debate mandatory military service
The youth organizations of Germany's Union and SPD parties are debating the reintroduction of mandatory military service.
Johannes Winkel, chairman of the Junge Union (JU), argued that if the Bundeswehr fails to reach its target of 190,000 soldiers by 2027, mandatory service must be implemented by July 2028. Winkel emphasized the need for decisive action, noting that current recruitment questionnaires are insufficient for deterrence.
In contrast, Philipp Türmer, chairman of the Jusos, maintains that service should remain voluntary. He pointed out that the Bundeswehr has already reached its 2026 personnel goal of approximately 186,700 soldiers through voluntary means. Türmer criticized the push for compulsion, stating that attractive working conditions are more effective than mandatory service and that his organization rejects all forms of compulsory military or civil service.
