Germany accelerates Bundeswehr modernization with major vehicle procurements

Germany is accelerating the transformation of its military, the Bundeswehr, through significant new procurement programs aimed at enhancing rapid deployment capabilities to NATO’s eastern flank.

A major component of this modernization involves the replacement of Marder armored vehicles with Puma infantry fighting vehicles. The Bundeswehr is reportedly preparing a new order for Puma vehicles valued at approximately five billion euros, with a contract expected to be finalized in 2027. This move aims to standardize the infantry fighting vehicle fleet, with a long-term goal of possessing approximately 1,000 Pumas.

In addition to the Puma, Germany is increasing orders for the Schakal infantry fighting vehicle, which is described as the backbone of its new Medium Forces. The order for these vehicles has been expanded by 35 units beyond the initial 150. These procurement efforts are part of a broader strategy to address capability gaps and prepare for potential large-scale conventional conflicts in Europe, including building infrastructure for the permanent deployment of troops in Lithuania.
