Germany accelerates military rearmament and defense spending

Germany is undergoing a significant military transformation, shifting from post-war caution to a strategy aimed at becoming Europe's most powerful military force. Central to this shift is the identification of Russia as the primary threat to European security.

To support this goal, Berlin has activated a 100 billion euro special fund for the Bundeswehr and committed to meeting NATO's 2% GDP defense spending target. The nation is aggressively expanding its defense industry, with hundreds of new companies emerging between 2024 and 2025. Notably, Rheinmetall has increased its annual artillery shell production from 70,000 to 1.5 million units and plans to invest 30 billion euros in munitions manufacturing over the next six years.

Germany is also prioritizing long-range strike capabilities, seeking to procure missile systems from partners such as the United States, Israel, Türkiye, and Ukraine. The military strategy outlines a phased approach: an immediate increase in operational readiness through 2029, followed by a massive expansion of land, air, sea, and cyber capabilities through 2035. The long-term objective is to maintain a combat-ready force of 460,000 personnel, including 260,000 active-duty soldiers and 200,000 reservists.
