Germany advances bid for 2036 Summer Olympics with IOC timeline

A recent poll in Brandenburg found that 51 % of respondents support a German bid for the Summer Olympic Games as early as 2036, with higher approval among younger voters (62 % of 16‑34‑year‑olds). The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is evaluating a joint bid from Berlin, Munich and the Cologne‑Rhein‑Ruhr region for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released a reformed selection schedule. After a continuous dialogue phase, the strategic dialogue will open in March 2027, followed by a targeted dialogue expected to conclude by the end of 2028. The final host decision will be taken at an IOC Session in mid‑2029, where roughly 100 members will vote. The process aims to increase transparency and reduce costs for applicant cities, while allowing the IOC to narrow the field early if it chooses to focus on a different continent.
