Germany advances nursing training with digital platform and new assistant law

A new virtual training application, MedSpace, is being introduced in German care facilities to allow staff and trainees to rehearse realistic nursing situations without risk to patients. The platform offers modular scenarios such as room preparation and care visits, aiming to improve observation, assessment, communication and decision‑making under time pressure.

At the same time, the German Bundestag is working on the Pflegefachassistenzgesetz, a law intended to create a uniform, nationally recognised education pathway for nursing assistants. The proposal seeks to standardise curricula across the 27 existing state programmes, guarantee proper remuneration, and enable mobility for trainees. The legislation was presented by the governing coalition in September 2024, but final approval has been delayed pending parliamentary negotiations.
