Germany advances quantum communication with satellite plans and hackathon
Germany is preparing to deploy satellite‑based quantum communication, leveraging quantum key distribution (QKD) to protect data against future quantum‑computer attacks. The technology relies on entangled photons, which allow secure transmission that is detectable if tampered with.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena hosted a Quantum Hackathon in July 2026, bringing together early‑career researchers and senior quantum experts. Participants attempted to breach a quantum‑secured system to identify weaknesses, aiming to make the technology robust for use by governments, security agencies and critical infrastructure. Dr. Karin Burger, scientific director of the O‑PEN project, and Dr. Norman Bedtke, project coordinator, emphasized the need to move quantum communication from the laboratory into real‑world applications and to raise public awareness of its benefits.
