Germany quantum communication development
Overview
Germany is accelerating the rollout of quantum-secure communications through satellite-based quantum-key-distribution (QKD) and advanced research. In August 2026, plans were announced for a satellite-based QKD network to protect data against future quantum-computer attacks using entangled photons. This follows a July hackathon at the Fraunhofer Institute in Jena, where researchers attempted to breach quantum-secured systems to identify vulnerabilities for government and critical-infrastructure users. Dr. Karin Burger and Dr. Norman Bedtke emphasized the necessity of moving quantum communication from the laboratory into real-world applications. To support this transition, the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg launched the QDD research project. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with €3.26 million, the project aims to use large language models to automate QKD and post-quantum cryptography across networks by 2029. However, a Fraunhofer study noted that German quantum start-ups face infrastructure gaps, including limited on-site hardware, low investment, and a reliance on non-European cloud services, which may slow the emergence of a self-sufficient European industry. Furthering long-distance network capabilities, the ‘Quantenrepeater. Net (QR. N)’ project has launched with approximately €20 million in funding over three years. This consortium, which includes the University of Paderborn, focuses on quantum frequency conversion to ensure quantum repeaters are compatible with existing telecommunications fiber networks, a critical step for transmitting quantum states over long distances. Complementing these networking efforts, the Senftenberg-based startup Quantum Grade Materials is advancing the hardware supply chain by producing highly pure, isotopically pure raw materials, such as Silane-28 and Germanium-73d. These materials are intended for use in quantum computers, specialized optics, and semiconductor components, with the company aiming to supply a significant portion of the European market through a patented transformation process. Recent developments show a growing focus on administrative security. German authorities are prioritizing the digitalization of federal and state networks to ensure digital sovereignty.
